HOWARD FAMILY REUNION - ATLANTA, GA 1987
Gregory and Lisa McClendon, children of Robert McClendon, son of Irene McClendon, at picnic in Grant Park.
On Friday night, family members enjoyed a get-re-acquainted social at the Holiday Inn. Some sat around the pool and indulged in conversations while others enjoyed a refreshing swim. Yet another group absorbed the city’s bright lights while venturing on a self-guided tour.
After a hearty Saturday-morning breakfast, the Howards boarded Marta, an underground subway, and headed for Lenox Square Mall, where many of them went on a shopping spree.
In the afternoon, the family went to Grant Park for a cookout, and everyone wore the family reunion T-shirts, maroon with gold lettering. Goldwire Simmons, husband of Corine, daughter of Obie, did the barbequing. Marilyn Howard, wife of Cecil, son of Obie, assisted with food preparations. It was delicious.
On Sunday, family members attended Mt. Welcome Baptist Church, where Cecil and Marilyn were members. Following the services, some family members detoured to visit the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Change. They toured the facility, looked at displays, which included King’s writings and clothing, and basked in this part of Black history that got us where we are today. They also got a chance to see the church that King grew up in and where he later preached.
That afternoon, a banquet was held at the hotel. Family members presented a program, and plans for next year’s reunion were made.
