HOWARD FAMILY REUNION - DETROIT, MI - 2023

A GRAND AFFAIR FOR ALL

This was our first reunion since before the pandemic that started in 2022. The reunion was held from July 14-16, 2023.

The Detroit family whipped up a wonderful three days of food, laughter, hugging, camaraderie, familial goodwill and a means for us to just get together, reconnect and enjoy each other.

On Friday, we gathered at the Hyatt Place Detroit/Novi, which welcomed us with a sign on its marquee outside and on a wall in the lobby. After the meal, a few family members drove into downtown Detroit to jam to the music of that 1970s p-funk band Parliament Funkadelics and George Clinton.

On Saturday, the weather was determined to rain on our picnic and send us packing, but we hung in there. By 3 pm, the sun was shining and some family members headed across the border into Canada for a visit.

On Sunday, we were feted with a program and wonderful meal by a local Black chef. Groups of families took photos in a Photo Booth, danced to a DJ, mingled some more and took photos.

Family member Gayla Howard of Atlanta reminded members that we must follow tradition and include the family tree on T-shirts with the names of Green and Rebecca Howard’s children as a way to preserve history.

The family paid homage to the members who were no longer with us, but were stalwarts both in the family and at the reunions. A generation has passed on, and we must carry on what they started.

The family voted to spend the next reunion in Puerto Rico, and Rev. Eric Howard agreed to make arrangements. That choice narrowly beat out Myrtle Beach, SC.

The weekend was also the birthday of Kevin Howard, son of Willie Floyd Howard (son of Alonzo Howard). Some family members presented him with a surprise birthday cake at the hotel.
