Childhood dream becomes reality

As a child, John Goolsby dreamed of being an entrepreneur – of owning a children’s clothing store. As he grew older, his dream changed; he got into sales and realized that he had finally found his niche.
For three years, he sold life insurance. For another three years, he sold real estate. The latter field fit him as snug as a sock, and in May 1985, he opened his own real estate company.
John had worked as a real-estate salesman for Troy Young Realty for three years. That experience “enhanced my capability to become a professional agent,” he said.
Ever eager to expand his education and expertise, he took business courses and attended seminars. He did this while working full time at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, GA. After he opened his company, he remained in that job, and sold real estate after work and on weekends.
“It wasn’t hard to establish a realty business,” he said. “The only hard part was financing. It takes a tremendous amount of funds.”
But John never gave up. With determination and perseverance, he prevailed. In 1987, Metro Realty was the No. 5 realty company in Macon, he said.
Four years after it opened, the company boasted 10 independent agents and a secretary. John is broker and Freeman Lester is associate broker.
His greatest satisfaction, John said, is “helping people and making people happy when they purchase their first home.”
He’s also happy, he said, “when customers are satisfied with Metro Realty’s service. Making customers satisfied is the biggest reward a business can receive.”
John hopes to expand into development. He’d like to build homes for sale.
