                                          AMAZING RACE COMPETITION

The family members had a day of fun Saturday with two competitions, one based on the popular TV show “Amazing Race,” where teams had to complete one task before going on to the next.

First – Mummy wrap

Family members divided into teams and wrapped one member of the team in toilet paper like a mummy. Everything was to be covered except the eyes. Once the team completed that exercise the team received its next list of tasks.

Amazing Race – Howard style

The teams were given a list of places to go and things to find in Macon and the surrounding area. To do so, they needed a camera, a map, the internet, and they had to chronicle their finds with photos. They had to stay together at all time at each location.

Places and things to choose from:

  • Macon soul singer Otis Redding Jr. built his home on a 300-acre ranch in Round Oak, GA, in Jones County, in 1967. Find the gated ranch.
Bring back photo of team members near the Big O Ranch sign. (Directions were shown on a map.)
  • Find the theater where disc jockey King Bee held Saturday morning teenage talent shows in 1958.  Get a photo of team members standing in front of the theater.
  • Find a sign that gives today’s temperature in Macon. Get a photo of the sign.
  • Find a gas station with regular unleaded gas is less than $2.15 a gallon.
  • Find the funeral mound at the Ocmulgee National Monument. The mound was the burial place for early Native American leaders and more than 100 burials were uncovered there. Get a photo of the team outside the mound.
  • Somewhere near Macon City Hall is a memorial for Rodney M. Davis, Macon’s only Black Medal of Honor recipient. Get a photo of the team at the memorial.
  • What time is Sunday service at Macon’s First Baptist Church, founded by Blacks 25 years before Emancipation. Bring back a photo of the church’s sign or a photo of the church.
  • 1437 Woodliff in Pleasant Hill was the birthplace of a famous Macon singer whose first hit song was “Tutti Fruitti.” What’s his name and find his old home, which is now a private residence. Get a photo. Write his name on a piece of paper and bring it back with you.
  • Go to a bookstore. Find the book “Roses are Red” by James Patterson. At the end of the last chapter (not the excerpt that follows it), the man called the Mastermind, whom detective Alex Cross has been chasing, reveals himself. What is the Mastermind’s real name? Write down the name on a piece of paper and bring it back. If the book is not available, find “Violets are Blue” by Patterson. At the end of the last chapter ((not the excerpt that follows it), Alex Cross makes a bid decision about his job. What does he decide? Write down the answer and bring it back with you.

The winner of the race is the team that performs all the task, gets to the gym where we all will congregate and has proof that it has completed every task. If that team has anything missing, it is disqualified. The win then goes to the second team that completed all the tasks.

The winning team won gift cards from Walmart.
